Overview
The University of Surrey is an international university with a worldwide reputation for excellence in teaching and research. It offers over 14,000 students a unique combination of high acedemic standards in over 50 main subjects provided by 2,300 members of staff, employment success and a prime location in beautiful surroundings, yet with ease of access to London.
Technology Transfer Success
Science and its commercialization have always been major strengths of the university. It has landmark collaborative agreements with M.I.T., CalTech and UCLA. The university hosts its own Science Research Park, home to many thriving state-of-the-art ventures, and is widely regarded as the best of its kind in the UK. Through one of the park's major success stories Surrey Satellite Technology Ltd (subject to regulatory approval) the university has achieved the highest cash realistion of any UK spin-out - the lastest in a series of such academic-commercial win-wins.
Verologik
In August 2009, the University and Vero Logik LLP entered into a partnership initiative to develop a global center of excellence in the application of artficial intelligence and other mathematical techniques to business problems. Phase I represented a significant research investment to develop what is considred to be the first comprehensive "Meta-System" of all relevant techniques and approaches drawn from all over the world. This initiative has revealed that certain combinations of techniques (which may have developed years and thousands of miles apart) can often provide more accurate classification of business decisions than systems that rely on one or two "favorite" algorithms. The proprietary models and pardigms resulting from this work form the basis of Vero Logik's first wave of commercial services and Phase II of its work with the University. Future developments may include embedded systems and the development of turnkey products in specific application areas.
